TRAUMA-FOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY
DOES THIS HAPPEN TO YOU?
Do you have recurring thoughts that intrude on your daily life?
Do these thoughts cause you to be discouraged about your life, your self, and relationships?
Do you find yourself behaving in ways you regret later?
Do you have negative beliefs about yourself?
Do you believe that trauma forever changed your life for worse, and nothing can make it better?
TF-CBT COULD HELP YOU
Since the 1970’s, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been widely used to help people understand how their thoughts affect how they feel, what they believe, and how they behave. When people grasp this connection, they have the ability to question the truth or falsity of their thoughts and subsequently change these along with feelings and behaviors.
The creators of Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) realized that grasping this connection wasn’t enough to alleviate symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma survivors experience a wide range of physical symptoms including being easily startled, hypervigilance, and freezing in place. The triangle of thoughts-feelings-behavior is important but not adequate to calm down unwanted reactions caused by trauma. TF-CBT was developed to target traumatic incidents and responses.
The original TF-CBT protocol was developed for children who experienced abuse and there is a lot of research studies that proved the correlation between TF-CBT and trauma healing. In fact, TF-CBT is the most widely researched trauma protocol, and some of those results are noted below. Due to its success, protocols were developed for adult survivors.
TF-CBT is also adaptable in that it can be used in conjunction with traditional talk therapy and other trauma-focused interventions.
WHAT TO EXPECT
After I establish a therapeutic relationship with you, we’ll go through an introduction to TF-CBT. This gives you a chance to ask questions and it gives me the opportunity to address your goals and concerns.
We will then prioritize your goals.
I’ll teach you trauma-focused interventions that will help you gain skills to alleviate symptoms that occur outside of therapy sessions. This is a crucial and empowering stage.
We will then take stock of PTSD triggers and how much they affect you. This will establish a baseline of symptoms, and as you continue in counseling we will keep track of your levels so you could see your improvement as therapy progresses.
When you’ve reached a low level that enables you to process traumatic incidents without being triggered, we will proceed to learning the specific thought-feeling-behavior triangles that you encounter in various aspects of your life, and then going through the process of changing them.
